In 1982, for the first time, the German Armed Forces, the Bundeswehr, conducted an official and public swearing in of new recruits in Bonn's Beethoven Square. For the first time since the end of World War II, a full military ceremony with bands playing is held in public. Bonn, at the time still the capital of West Germany, is a battle camp for police: 10,000 of them were deployed to guard 150 recruits from a crowd of 4,000 irate demonstrators. In calm and steady pictures, without commentary, the film depicts the absurd situation. |
